Selection
March 26, 2018
In this society, AI has made remarkable progress.
AI would recommend many things. At@least he would follow AI's recommendation, like below:

One day, he was watching a movie on a movie streaming website, which AI recommended. It was the first time that he accepted AI's recommendation. He wanted something refreshing this time.

He always had been a movie buff.
He thought that his intuition about movie selection was good. It was his 'specialty' to be able to guess whether or not a movie was good from looking at the cover of the DVD or from other information. He used this movie site often, which provided a broad selection of movies at a regular monthly cost.

Since he was a child, he saw a lot of movies. When he was young, he subscribed to a movie magazine. He once sent a movie review about a movie, and a professional critic praised him in the magazine about his critiques saying that he had sharp insight, including specific uniqueness. It deepened his confidence about evaluating movies. Since then, he had been polishing his sense of finding good movies and critiquing them.

But this time, his intuition didn't work. In fact, five times in a row! The last five movies were disasters. Anyone has a slump. As a refreshment, he decided to use AI's recommendation for the first time.

It was a great movie!
It was a spy movie, and depicted the spy's conflict of loneliness. A spy had to make his missions secret, even from his wife, while he had pride that he sometimes had saved his country from a crisis. At the last part of the movie, he had to choose between whether to die with his wife knowing his occupation, or to die without revealing his identity: With the former choice, his country would be more at risk. After the movie, he couldn't move. He hadn't watched this quality movie for several years.

It was very shocking that the AI chose this movie. This movie didn't get any awards, even movie freaks like him didn't hear any 'buzz' about this movie.

"This must be beginner's luck," he thought.  So he decided to get another recommendation, this time a comedy.

It was a surrealistic comedy. The protagonist was a guard of a major company's headquarters building. One day, he made a small mistake, and it influenced others. The effect relayed from one person to the next. At the end, the company went bankrupt.
It was also a great movie. Beginner's luck wouldn't continue twice. He had to admit the AI's ability. He sighed.

After this incident he became curious about AI's selection.
He knew some services that recommend clothing for customers. The customer would fill in the form about his/her gender, three sizes, and age. The customer would also send some pictures of his/her clothes which he/she liked. Then the AI computer would choose some clothes for them and send them on a regular basis, for example, once a month. Before, he would definitely hate to have his clothes chosen by a computer. However, now, he reconsidered.

He chose one of the websites and sent his identity and some pictures of his favorite clothes that he owned.

Soon the website showed some articles of clothing that the computer recommended. To come to think of it, this is reasonable, he thought. He could check the clothes that were recommended in advance on the screen, so the risks were limited that the AI's recommendation didn't match him and he wouldn't notice it until the clothes were sent to him. He chose three items, a jacket, jeans, and a T-shirt from the recommendation list that the AI had made.

Two days later, he received them. Soon he changed his clothes and went out to the downtown area. It was a refreshing experience. He liked them. His sense for clothing wasn't bad, but he would never had chosen these designs. Maybe his way of selecting was somehow conservative. Now, he felt like he was living a different life.

This reminded him of an experience that he had when his necktie was chosen by a shop clerk. Once, he chose a tie by the recommendation of a female clerk. He was amazed by her sense of choice. But he had never experienced that thing since. He wouldn't dare ask anyone for their advice, and shop clerks were too modest to give their advice.

Humans are sometimes creatures that overthink. Maybe AI doesn't have this type of modesty. He thought, "Maybe AI's strong point (at least for now) is that they don't have their own thought like, 'If I advise something, this guy might think I like him ...'" They don't have prejudices, preferences, for the subjects, i.e. the customers.

He had heard that some couples had met each other from the web. They could know about each other well through a bulletin board or something before starting to date. It might make their relationship smoother.

Maybe in the near future AI computers could successfully match couples.
Amazon might start that service. They have a huge amount of data of what the customers had bought, their book preferences, movie preferences, etc. They might recommend, "If you go on a date with this woman, you should wear this jacket." "If you go on a date with this guy, this perfume would attract him with the possibility of 70 percent."

Maybe this type of service already had started, but for him it seemed too much.
