Collector
April 21, 2015
He was a collector of outstanding debt from people.
He was employed by a credit card company. On this day, he was collecting money from a young woman in her apartment. She owed a couple thousand dollars for a couple of months. Her credit card was inactivated.

He switched on his smartphone's recording mode and said, "I'm supposed to record any conversations of mine with customers and submit it to my company, in case of being sued from the customers." His way of saying this was somehow soft. He winked at her. Tears welled up in her eyes, feeling fear from his gentleness. In the end, she promised to sell her unneeded clothes, and pay the money by the end of the week. He left her apartment.

He liked his job. He liked working at his pace. When he feeling good, he would go to more than five houses or companies to find the persons who were in debt and collect the money. On this day he already got four promises. He could go slower tomorrow.

From his appearance, his face with his sharp eyes and a ducktail hairstyle, and his
style of clothes: black shirt and white jacket, easily reminded people of the Mafia or Yakuza. The customers were so frightened that very few people resisted, so he only took physical actions very few times.

He thought, "Why have these people used more money than their salary? One guy bought ten motorbikes. One woman bought a hundred brand-named bags. Does she have ten hands? She can't have even two bags with her at one time. They are sick."

He was driving on a narrow road going to the next customer to collect money. Soon he noticed a woman riding on a small electric cart and moving in the same direction in front of his car. She moved her chin, maybe she controlled her cart that way, she looked young from behind. He was driving slowly keeping a distance, thinking not to give pressure to her.

After a while, there was a horn from the car behind him and continued a couple of times. He stopped his car, got out and went to the driver. The driver, who was a young guy, looked very upset and apologize many times. He reversed his car until he found a side road and left in a hurry.  He sighed, "You don't need apologize to me. I just wanted to explain the situation."

He returned to his car. Soon he realized the woman's cart was laying on the road. He was upset. He rushed to the woman. He thought at first she was unconscious or something because she was laying still. But, soon he found that she was alive only just staring at one place. She seemed to give up moving, knowing it wouldn't result in anything.

Noticing his existence, she was about to move her face. He lifted her upper body up. She looked to be in her late twenties.

He asked, "Are you ok?" She nodded. Her face looked as if to say that she was sorry to give him this trouble. She couldn't talk. He continued, "Can I carry you to my car, ok?"  She nodded again.

After he carried her to his car's backseat and put on her seat belt, he then put her cart in the trunk. He asked her where she was going. Using her chin, she showed her bag hanging from her neck. He carefully took it from her neck and opened it. There was a piece of paper, it read:

'My name is Kei Win. I live in XXXX. Thank you for assisting me. Sometimes my cart won't want to move because of my hard use. If you don't mind, can you take me to the rehabilitation center as follows? If you are busy, please call my mom. Thank you.
The XXX Rehabilitation Center (Address: XXXX )
Monday: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.  Rehabilitation
Tuesday: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Rehabilitation
Wednesday: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Rehabilitation
Thursday: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Rehabilitation
Friday: 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Rehabilitation'

When he looked at the note he felt very weak. He looked at her. She shrugged, at least it looked like a shrug to him. This day was Friday. He looked at his watch: it was a little before 3 o'clock. He asked, "Do you want to go to the rehabilitation center at this address?"  She smiled. He said, "We need to hurry." He put the address of the center into his car's navigation system and started his car.

He was thinking, looking at her through the rear-view mirror, what suitable questions she could reply by nodding or shaking her head.

He called to the customer to cancel today's meeting. There was a relieved voice from the other end of the phone.

He liked his job. He could easily change his day's schedule.
