Pigeon
June 22, 2014
In this society, the technology was so great that all resources which humans need were mined in space and then sent to earth where robots processed it.  So, people didn't have a lot of things to do; they were overweight and quite a few of them were in bad health.

So, the government, being worried about the budget for health care, made a lot of free sports facilities, gyms, soccer fields, golf courses, even beaches for sailing, or mountain-bike courses.
But not all people liked sports.

He received an e-mail from the government this morning.  He hadn't exercised for a couple of weeks so he knew what the e-mail meant.
The mail read: You must catch a pigeon, and send a picture of its dead body by 5 pm.

He sighed.
This was not his first task and he also knew that if he didn't obey this order, his one week food allotment would be cut. "Butc" he thought, "A pigeon is ridiculous."

He hadn't seen a pigeon for more than ten years. Being fearful of the influence of the
bird influenza, the government exterminated almost all wild birds. Maybe the government makes him kill one of the last ones left.

He went out of his house and rode his bicycle. He went to the parks nearby.
He couldn't find any birds, including pigeons.
He asked people in the parks whether they had seen any pigeons lately and they all said, "Never."

He called his friends but they also said "No."
He looked at his watch. It was about noon. He only had another five hours remaining.
He wiped his sweat from his forehead. He already cycled more than thirty kilometers.

When he was cycling on the road by the river, his phone rang, it was from his friend.  His friend said he found a pigeon.

He hurriedly went to the place where his friend mentioned, a small park downtown.  His friend was waiting for him.

His friend pointed to the corner of the park where there was a seesaw. A pigeon was walking, which was skinny and dirty; he had never seen that kind of pigeon before.  He felt sad.  After staring at the pigeon for a long time, he took a plastic bag of popcorn from his bag and spread it around.  Soon the pigeon came over and started to eat.  It was kind of cute.

His friend asked in a worried tone, "Are you going to kill it?"
He said nothing. He had come to think about giving up his one week food allowance.
