Shyness 2-3
Jun 16, 2013
The doctor asked, "Are you angry with me?"   "I think so," she answered in a strong tone.  He asked, "Do you feel any shyness now?"   After a pause, she said, "I don't think so."  He continued, "Shyness is one of human's basic feelings; and, anger is too.  So shyness and anger do not stay together."  He waited for a certain time until she understood what he said, and said, "You focus on your shyness more than other people.  Shy people have a tendency to do this.  So if you have something that distracts you from your shyness, you will succeed to feel free from your shyness."
This was a new idea to her.  She thought that this might work: when she is about to feel shy, she should focus on feeling angry.
The doctor announced in a confident voice, "Do you understand?"   His way of asking sounded arrogant to her.  He
misjudged her again.  Her anger didn't subside when she asked, "So, should I feel angry every time in front of my students?"  He laughed, "Being angry is only one example: you can feel sad one day, you can feel excited another day."
She said, "You doctors think patients are like robots.  We can't change our feeling that easily.  Are you really a good mental doctor?"   He didn't laugh this time.  She said in a cold voice, "This time, you should feel embarrassed before getting angry, if you can."
The doctor stared at her without saying anything.  After a while, he took a small breath, and said, "By the way, why are you shy?"   She didn't expect this direct question.  She was upset and looked at him.  He stared back.  She became nervous but she managed to think about this question and replied in a small voice, "I think I want people to think of me as a good person.  So I feel pressure."  He asked, "Why do you want to be liked by people?"   She said, "I think this is a natural idea for human beings, but mine is very strong, maybe."   He asked, "Ok, so, do you feel nervous in front of your family or close friends?"   She thought for a few minutes and said, "No."  The doctor asked, "Why? You don't want them to like you?"
She was stuck.  "Why don't I feel shyness in front of my family members or close friends?"  She thought hard.  Several minutes later, she shouted, "I got it!"
She excitedly said, "Because, they know me well.  They know me completely.  So there is no reason for me to cover up in front of them.  So I don't feel any pressure, and so, I don't feel any shyness."  The moment when she said this, she came up with an idea.  She looked at the doctor.  The doctor nodded smiling.
