Bar
April 27, 2015
He was walking in a downtown area at night. Without any intention, he saw a neon bar sign, it read 'Theater.'  He was a movie buff so he became interested with the sign. At the door, there was a poster with detective type of illustration. Under the illustration there was some information that read:
"You can enjoy being in your own role. If you are good, you can get a discount, depending on the level of your performance. Why don't you try!?"

Under that, there were casting names, which read:
Customer (Undercover Detective) (Kevin)
Madam of the bar (Amanda)
Customer A (Todd)
Customer B (Marlon)
Customer C (Kate).

He didn't understand what the poster meant, "Is there DVD movie playing in the bar?"  He was somehow curious, especially about the 'discount' part, so he opened the door, and went inside.

It was kind of small inside. There was no DVD projection. There was a row of seven or so counter seats, and half of them were occupied. At the counter, there was a middle-aged woman in bright clothes; as soon as she looked at him, her face brightened.

"Oh, Kevin! Long time no see! We've just been talking about you!"  The other customers at the counter, two guys and one young woman, looked at him at the same time. Their expressions looked as if they were evaluating him.

The woman at the counter said, "It's been ages since you've last come. I think that you might be good at selling cars?"

By this time, he remembered the copies of the poster 'enjoy your role'. He cleared his
throat and said, "Long time no see, Amcmanda! I'm kind of busy nowadays, c as you said, the recent economy is kind of good. Can I sit here?" he pointed to the nearest seat at the door. The woman named Amanda said, "The seat was waiting for you."  She added in a low voice, "All the staff's lined up."  He ordered a beer.

Amanda asked another guy, "Marlon, how's your business? You are a bank manager, right?"  The guy called Marlon replied, "Actually, as that guy said, we also enjoy the good economy."

Amanda asked the other guy, "Todd, how about you? You are a lawyer, aren't you?"  Todd mentioned about his recent business.

Amanda asked the young woman, "Kate, I heard you found a good boyfriend recently. I envy you." Kate replied accordingly.

He thought, "Maybe Amanda was introducing the other customers to me to make this game smooth. What is going to happen next?"

After some light conversation, the young woman called Kate asked Amanda, "Did you hear about the murder near here?"

Amanda's voice became quiet, "Of course. Detectives came here many times. They said that some witnesses said that the criminal was a guy, and the way of killing the poor woman was cruel. I'm terrified. He might have been a customer at this bar."

Todd exclaimed, "He might be one of us."  Kate responded, "I'm pleased that I'm a woman." Marlon mentioned, "You could of disguised yourself as a man. Even not, from your short hair cut and appearance, people might take you as a guy." Kate mumbled, "Todd, is this sexual harassment?"  Todd said, "Sorry ma'am. I have a bad habit of not bringing my business attitude into my private time."  Kate shrugged showing that it couldn't be helped.

He remembered his role: 'undercover detective.' He wondered what he should inject about this.

Suddenly the telephone rung. Amanda took it and said something. Her face became hard. "Yes. Yes. I understand. Yesc "  She hung up the phone. She started to make a drink. It was a cocktail.  To the others, it looked like she was making time to calm herself down.  After making the drink, she said, "That phone call was about my son. He passed his exam. Why don't we cerebrate?" She raised her glass.  But nobody believed what she said.

Suddenly, Marlon stood up and went to the door and locked it. He drew a gun from his pocket. There was a big commotion from the others.

Marlon said, "I know, Amanda. You got a phone call from the police. They must have told you to try to keep me here until they come, right?" Amanda said nothing, but her expression expressed that what he said seemed to be correct.

Todd said, "Calm down, Marlon. You don't need to act so seriously. This is only a game."  Marlon said, "Game? This is not a game. I wish this was a game, though. I just chose this bar because it seemed not crowded."

Amanda said seriously, "He is right. Unfortunately, the police don't play." The other three, Todd, Kate and Kevin, were sitting wondering if this was real or just a show. Marlon looked at their expressions and became furious, "Don't you believe me?" He dashed over to Kate's seat and grabbed her hand and returned to the door. This time, he took a fork from the table and was pressing it against her throat. Soon, in a sobbing voice, she pleaded, "Please don't do that, pleasec"

Kevin calmly said, "I thought that you were the murderer. I'm an undercover detective. I have experience with killers. You have the eyes of a killer."  Marlon smiled, "Oh, you revealed yourself. So, it's easier to resolve this 'complicated part'." Marlon began to draw his gun, but his actions were a little off because he had to change his hands to hold the gun.

Kevin jumped on Marlon, and knocked the gun out of his hand with a bottle of beer; then he hit Marlon on his face.

There was a voice from the other three people, "Ok, ok. You were great!"  "Splendid!" "I've never seen such a good job like this." Amanda returned them to their seats and served them new drinks. She said, "I'll buy all your drinks tonight. Today's performance was the best."  They made a toast.
