Occupation
September 27, 2015
She paid the entrance fee, and received her ID card, and put it around her neck.

She passed Gate G which had a sign that read 'Hospital', and received a uniform from a female clerk. The clerk showed her the locker rooms, and said, "Good luck."  She nodded a little bit shyly.

After changing her clothes into the nurse's uniform, she proceeded through the entrance door which had a notice:
Welcome to our 'Hospital'!
If you feel bad physically or mentally   during the middle of work, you can stop your role anytime. You can try this again at a later time. For details, please check the document you have received.
Enjoy your job!

When she was a child, she wanted to be a nurse. As she was growing, she came to think that being a nurse would be tough. Eventually, she didn't choose a nursing school, but went to a regular college and became an office worker. She was satisfied with her present job, but sometimes, when
she saw nurses, she thought what if she had been a nurse, how would it have been? When she received the brochure of this service on the street, her heart started to pound. She applied for it soon afterwards.

This service was run by a company which had some theme parks for kids. For their kids' service, they offered various types of occupation workshops. Because the kids' service succeeded all over the world, they recently started an adult version.

In the kids' service, the popular workshops were a baker, a pastry chef, a cook of a pizza shop or a sushi shop, all related to food because kids love food. The company did marketing research for adults and prepared these occupations:
Airline Pilot, Flight Attendant, Train Driver, Police Officer, Doctor, Nurse, Judge, Lawyer, Kindergarten Teacher, School Teacher, Actor or Actress, and Singer.

Each occupation was rather elaborate. The company insisted upon details, in other words 'reality'. For example in the 'Hospital' case, they gathered applicants one month before. They assigned each applicant's occupation according to their wish. For example if a guy hoped to be a doctor, if the number of applicants to be a doctor were too many, they would set a complicated heart operation, which would need a lot of doctors. They also sent the applicants in advance a manual book that included a video and a rough scenario of the day that they would join.

Furthermore, they employed some workers who had a doctor or nurse's license, and assigned them accordingly. They also employed patients. (There were several male volunteers to be patients because they expected a gentle and kind treatment from the nurses.)

As soon as she opened the door, the noise of a busy hospital sounded. One of the nurses walking toward her smiled at her and asked, "How're you doing, Naomi?"  She was puzzled but soon she realized her name tag and the woman was pointing to her own name tag, it read 'Sandra'. She cleared her throat and said, "Hi, Sandra. Not bad, and you?"  "Fine. But Dr. Jones is in a bad mood today. So you should pay attention to him." The woman called Sandra winked and went in one of the patient rooms.

Looking at the woman, she remembered the binder she had received at the counter which had medical charts. She looked around and found the room which one of the charts showed. She breathed deeply and entered the room.

There were six male patients in there.
She approached the nearest guy who was in his fifties. His chart read his name and his sickness. She smiled and said, "Hi, Peter. How are you today?" The guy replied, "I feel better than last night."  "Good, good." She checked his pulse and temperature and noted them on his chart. Then she talked to the next person, "Hi, Takeshi. You also feel better, right?" The man in his 40s said, "I'm not. I know my condition is not good." She glanced at his chart. He suffered from heavy diabetes. When she was wondering how to cheer him up, he said, "But, I can live happily today because I have met a cute nurse."  Another guy said that it was not fair to monopolize her. She talked back, "If you make fun of nurses, you're supposed to receive a very painful injection." All the patients complained.

After checking all of the guys, she transferred to a female patients room. There were also six of them. One of the patients named Margaret said, "I'm afraid of my surgery tomorrow."  She gently took her hand and said, "It will only take an hour. If you think about your old boyfriends, maybe one hour wouldn't be enough for you." Another patient teased, "She has loved only one guy, her husband. One hour wouldn't be enough just thinking about one guy."  They laughed.

Suddenly, there was an announcement from the room speaker, "For the workers." The announcement called three names including hers, and asked them to come to Operation Room No.3 immediately.  She became tense. Seeing her face, the patients in the room cheered her up. She was a little embarrassed that she was being cheered up by her patients. She thanked them and went out the room hurriedly.

She opened the operation room. There was a doctor and a couple of nurses, they moved busily in preparation. The doctor noticed her and told her to wear her surgical clothes. After she washed her hands, she put on gloves and a mask, and returned. An injured person on a stretcher was brought in by an ambulance staff. The doctor told the nurses to listen to his directions. She looked at the patient. The guy was in his 30s. He had a bruise on his face, and blood oozed from his bandages.

The doctor told her to support him. She remembered that she had studied about the procedures of an operation by watching the video. The doctor said, "Scissors." After a pause, she handed them to him. He cut the bandages and handed the scissors back to her and said, "Scalpel".  She did. Surprisingly, he started to cut the skin of the patient. Some blood came out. She felt nauseated but she realized that it was just artificial blood and silicon skin, although she wondered how real it looked.

The doctor's skill was good, at least she thought so. After one and a half hours, he stitched-up the skin and called for the operation's end. The doctor thanked the staff for their good job. She felt her body relax.

When she was taking off her surgical clothes, there was an announcement to tell some of the applicants that their time expired. Her name was included. She looked at her watch. It was past 4 hours after she had entered this 'hospital'.  She was surprised by how fast the time passed.

When she proceeded to the door where she had entered, all of the staff who passed by smiled at her and said, "Good job!" or "I enjoyed working with you!"  She smiled back and thanked them. She felt a little proud.

She changed her uniform into her original clothes, and went to the counter.  The clerk at the counter handed her some pictures, which were of the scenes in the patient rooms and the surgery room. In the pictures, she was smiling at the patients and in some of them her face was serious, it seemed heart-warming.

She went outside. The wind was comfortable.
She felt a sense of accomplishment. She knew that in reality, nurses' work was hard and it might to be arrogant that she felt some satisfaction with this one day experience. But, even so, she felt that she could work at her present job more positively from now on by remembering her precious experience. Looking at the pictures became her treasure.
