| In this society, the technology was very high and some people could easily take somebody else's identity. For example, by using some special machines, a voice could be changed into another person's. The police recommended to use TV telephones if they had important conversations. But, some new technologies caught up to this situation. He got a phone call. He touched the TV button. Soon his girlfriend appeared on the screen. His girlfriend wasn't smiling. He said, "Hi, Cindy. I wanted to see you. You look upset. Is something wrong?" She replied, "Something is wrong with you." He became upset, "W.. what's wrong with me? Actually, we talked yesterday but you didn't say anything." She cleared her throat and said, "Yesterday was yesterday. Actually, yesterday I couldn't say this because you looked happy." He became more worried, "What do you mean?" She proceeded to tell him that she was fed up with him being boring and not sophisticated. She wanted to break up with him. He was very shocked. He and his girlfriend had been going out with each other for a couple of years. He had no idea why she suddenly wanted to break up with him. He barely said, "I don't want to talk about this by phone. Tomorrow is the weekend. I'll go to your place. I'll buy an airline ticket today." She coldly responded, "If you come to my
He begged her to reconsider. The phone was disconnected. For a while, he couldn't think about anything. "What happed to her? When we talked yesterday, she was in a good mood. Or, was she pretending? But why this suddenc? " After hanging up the phone, Cindy's father grinned. "Not, bad. Not bad, for the first time. This machine is smarter than I had expected. With some more calls after, he will give up my daughter. He is so dull and unsophisticated. He doesn't suit my daughter at all." A couple of weeks after, he was eating lunch in a small Chinese restaurant in bad mood. The commentator on the TV reported about a recent crime. He asked an old woman, "But, why did you pay so much money to the man who was disguised as your grandson?" The old woman stared at him with sharp eyes and said, "Please don't treat me like a stupid old lady. The man's face on my phone screen was just the same as my grandson's. He cried and his lifting shoulders pose was just the same as my grandson's, again. But, even in that situation because of the amount of huge money, I double-checked. I asked him what I gave him last year as a birthday present and he answered it was the jacket with a Pokemon illustration on its chest. You know, he is 26 but a Pokemon freak. They are professionals. The cheating machines are so smart and they keep huge data, it is beyond our imagination. You would be deceived by a person who is disguised as your wife, easily!" His chopsticks stopped. "Has somebody pretended to be Cindy?" Come to think of it, her way of saying was a little bit strange. "But who c?" Soon he came up with Cindy's father. He hated him. He used to be an engineer working at an electric appliance company. For him, this kind of thing would seem to be a piece of cake. He picked up his phone and was about to call his girlfriend but stopped, thinking, "Maybe if I call her, it will be transferred to her father's phone that has some function equipped." He instead accessed a flight company's site and started to check a vacant seat for tomorrow's flights. When they met, his girlfriend was furious when her boyfriend explained about the phone incident. She said that her father recently borrowed her phone saying his phone was not working. When she called her boyfriend last week, his expression was a little bit strange, and he said he couldn't talk to her for a while and asked her to use e-mail for the time being. After this conversation she received an e-mail from him. She showed him the email on her phone, it read: 'Dear, Cindy. Please wait for a while. I was assigned a tremendous important job this month. This is urgent and I need to concentrate on this. You can e-mail me. Love.' He sighed and said, "I didn't think your father hates me this badly." She started to call her father, but he stopped her. He said, "If you say something to your dad, the next time he might use a more elaborate method. He needs a lesson, a tough lesson. I have an idea." Cindy's father received a phone call from his daughter. First he pushed the special button which would prevent eavesdropping and checking it was a genuine person, his daughter. He also knew that his daughter was in the country side rather than a suburb by its GPS. He selected the TV mode and soon his daughter appeared. She was crying. He was upset and asked, "What happened, honey?" She replied, "When I called my boyfriend, I soon realized that he was somehow strange. He avoided to talk directly to me and asked me to use e-mail. I became suspicious and flew to meet him yesterday." Her father was tense. She continued, "When I met him, he was with a girl. He introduced the girl as his new girlfriend. He said something nonsensical that it was me who first wanted to break up with him. He had been cheating me! I was so furious that I hit the woman in the face with my keys. She got severely injured and an ambulance came... I can't live anymore. I'm going to jump off from this bridge." She showed her phone camera the bridge and the bottom of the river far below. Her father cried, "No, no, no, no! This is not your mistake. No. This is my mistake! My fault! Don't be ridiculous! Please let me explaic" She interrupted and said, "I love you, dad. You are so kind to me always. I'm sorry. Forgive me." After saying this, she threw her phone from the bridge without hanging up, remaining on TV mode. (Of course she could recover the phone by its insurance.) The 'medicine' was enough strong to change her father's outlook. He was in deep shock and couldn't get up from his bed for a couple of weeks. His wife told him that if he wouldn't be happy with their daughter's boyfriend, she would divorce him. Her father had no choice. |
