Alien

Aliens came to the Earth. This was one of their regular planet inspections.

In their galaxy, they don't have the idea of 'cycle'.  The Earth has two types of 'cycles'. One is the rotation of the Earth itself, the other is traveling around the Sun. One rotation of the Earth is one day, one orbit around the Sun is one year.  For one year, the Earth revolves around itself 365 times, so one year has 365 days. Human beings divide one day into 24 hours, one hour into 60 minutes, and one minute into 60 seconds.  And, thus, they made a clock.

On the aliens' planet, they had a notion of 'time'. Because they are creatures, creatures have longevity.  They ate, slept, and worked. @So, they needed their 'time' to have pace. But, their planet travels around their fixed star and one rotation is (in Earth time) more than@two hundred years; it was longer than their personal longevity. So, as a result, they don't have a notion of a 'cycle'.

In the spaceship, there were two aliens who were assigned to this time's planetary
inspection. One was a veteran and the other was a newcomer.  The newcomer asked the veteran, "What are they doing?" (This is translated from their language.)  The veteran said, "Which one?"  The newcomer said, "I didn't mean one person. They are illuminating their houses using a series of small lamps. Are they welcoming us?"

The veteran laughed, "No, no. Nobody on Earth can recognize us. The people are decorating their houses."  "What for?"  "I don't know in detail. But, I've read before, they regularly celebrate something."  The newcomer was confused, "Why do they celebrate regularly? If they want to celebrate something, they should celebrate it when they want to do it."

The veteran said, "They like to do something together regularly. When I came here last time, I saw one family celebrating their son's birthday."  The newcomer became uneasy, "What do you mean 'birthday'?  'Birthday' is the day somebody is born. They can't celebrate it, can they?"

The veteran started to be tiresome that his colleague didn't learn anything about the Earth at all. So he had to explain everything about human customs using 'cycles of time'.

The newcomer became amazed, "Wow, interesting! But, I still don't understand. Why do they celebrate their birthdays? If they want to say something to their son, they can do it anytime they want to do it." The veteran said, "Maybe they want to give a present to their son."

After saying this, the veteran regretted mentioning it because the newcomer kept asking about the present system over and over again. In their society, nobody gave presents. Even though the veteran explained about presents, the newcomer still couldn't understand, especially why parents need to give presents to their children on this planet. In the aliens' society, parents feed their children but they never give children extra things for their lives.

As the veteran looked at his co-worker getting excited about the customs of the Earth, he got an idea and said, "Soon you can see more interesting things."  "What is that?"

A week later (in Earth time), they came to an area.
The veteran said, "In this area, they pray something on the morning of the first day of the year." By this time the newcomer understood the notion of time on Earth completely. His eyes shone brightly, "What do you mean by praying?"

The veteran replied, "It's a resolution."  "What's a 'resolution'?"  "It means a wish they want to fulfill."  "To whom do they pray?"  "To themselves."

The newcomer was surprised, "What? If they need to do something, do it! Or, at least they should keep it in their minds. Why do they need to 'pray', especially to themselves?  Furthermore, why do they need to wait until a certain day comes?"

The veteran said, "Maybe they need momentum." The newcomer was more surprised, "Why do they need momentum to do their own things? We have been negotiating various problems with an uncountable number of other planets. I can say they need momentum."

The veteran was about to explain that their resolutions are easier ones like to quit smoking or drinking, or to lose weight. But, if he said to the newcomer, this conversation would become endless, so he didn't say anything more.
