Robot Society 5
March 19, 2018
Recent AI robots' developments have been remarkable. Some researchers suggested that AI robots might threaten human society in the future once they have their own will, and start to think that humans were inferior to robots.

He was worried about it and studied about AI robots on the internet and learned the current situation of AI robots:

1. Present AI robots' AI level is rather low. Actually, an AI robot defeated a GO master, but it only plays games. Auto-drive cars only drive a car, they can't open the top of a bottle of juice while driving. Sushi robots only make sushi, they can't make curry as well. Some researchers make fun of the 'AI' saying it is not 'Artificial Intelligence' but rather 'Artificial Ignorance'. Humans are flexible, they have adaptability for each situation; they think creatively. Humans' diversity is totally beyond AI robots'.

2. AI's level is improving. If they are given suitable instructions, they can learn by themselves by using a huge amount of information, usually taken from the Internet.

3. AI robots can move fast and precise. In many factories, like those that make smartphones, cars, electric appliances, etc., the AI robots have the main role in production.

4. Cameras and GPS information has enabled AI robots to move automatically. Autonomous cars and other transportation methods, like drones, are expected to be created.

5. Human-like interface robots have been developed. They speak using human-like voices. They sound natural and logical.  But even so, they just choose the sentences that the owner would feel natural or comfortable with. They don't have their own opinions.

6. About the future of AI robots, there are various predictions. The negative prediction: Robots would improve, but they wouldn't work as good as humans. Some jobs or tasks are replaced by robots, so the kind of jobs would change, but still a lot of jobs would remain. The positive prediction: Robots' brains would become just like humans, meaning that they could think like humans. Robots are fast and precise, and can be connected to the Internet and other computers to receive more information. Robots would be able to make better decisions than humans' in companies, in public areas, including governments. Robots' decisions would be prioritized over humans'. Eventually robots would become the center of the world ....

He didn't want to be ordered around by robots or obey robots. He hoped that the government would supervise robots suitably. As a try, he started to think about an ideal AI robot for him:

Maybe he wanted a woman type of humanoid robot, a young one. But maybe his wife would be against it, and suggest a young handsome male robot. So they would compromise and decide to have two robots. He liked to play poker. So he and his wife would enjoy playing poker with their robots. The robots would be programmed not to win every time, and pretend to be not so strong.

Maybe humanoid robots would be given certain characteristics. If not, the owner would feel that the robot was cold, and somehow mechanical. And if their appearances were the same, as the number of humanoids increased, people would be confused which was which. So robots would have their own looks and characteristics.

All robots were friendly to humans, of course. Because of this, some robots would be ordered to do something ridiculous or illegal. What if the owner ordered the robot to hurt somebody? They are faster and stronger than humans. Bad people would think to use their robots for robbery. Robots don't leave a proof of identity like finger-prints or hair samples. Maybe the government would make laws to register robots like cars, and put a chip in them to follow their movements. The government might tax the robots like cars.

Maybe he would buy a robot with money. Robots' abilities must vary according to their prices. As he paid a lot of money, he would ask his robot to help him with his job. Maybe his robot would make speech drafts, PowerPoint presentation documents, next year's sales plans, etc. He would ask it to book a flight. He might ask it to reserve a table at a restaurant. He usually didn't make reservations for restaurants because it was troublesome. But to ask his robot to do it would be a piece of cake, and his demands would increase.

Maybe his wife would also ask her robot many things. She would ask her robot to vacuum, to make meals, to wash the dishes, to wash clothes, fold them, and put them on the shelves … So what would she do? She would watch TV, go to the gym, meet her friends and talk …

Maybe one day, the female robot and the male robot would talk about their owners. They might use the words 'unfair' or 'unreasonable'. They might say, "We are not slaves!" Engineers of the robots would need to program them not to disobey humans. "But …," he thought. "Definitely humans would escalate their orders for the robots."

He thought that AI robots could become saviors of society. They could diagnose diseases more correctly, and operate difficult surgeries. Their ability would become better, and they would become cheaper day by day. It means that all costs, production costs, service costs, and our living costs would become cheaper day by day. Transportation would become smoother and more speedy. The qualities of products would become better ...

But even so, he was skeptical about the opinion that a robotic society was rosy.
