Shyness Remover
December 25, 2016
He was shy.
He hated his shyness. Especially when his girlfriend pointed out his shyness during a date, he really wanted to change this characteristic.

One day he was browsing in an antique shop, and saw a box with a title, which read 'Shyness Remover'. In the box, there was a helmet that looked like something for a warrior in the medieval era.

The shop owner came soon and asked, "Are you curious about this?"  The man hesitated for a moment, but said yes. The owner started to explain, "This machine was invented to change a certain characteristics of the user. The creator of the machine was a king of a country, and he hated his shyness. So, he made his scientist create a machine in order to change his characteristic. But the machine didn't work, and the scientist was executed." He added, "The story is suspicious so I could get this at a cheap price." The owner laughed mischievously.

The owner showed him the side of the helmet. There were some levers. He continued, "There was no manual for the helmet, so I tried it many times." The owner handed the helmet to the man. It was heavier than he had expected.

"You can see the marks '‡T', '‡U', and '‡V' on the side. I guess these are for the levels of the length of the signal."  The man asked, "Signal?"  "Yes."  The owner showed him a small handle and started to wind it. There was a sound like a winding of a clock. When it was completely wound up, he stopped and put the machine close to the guy's ear. He could hear a small buzzing sound from the machine.

The owner said, "I asked about this to my friend who is a scientist. He said it was an electric signal, it occurs from the static electricity that the gadget produces. Rotating is needed for this. My friend said that this signal was sent to the wearer's temples. But, my friend said this is not effective to the brain, although harmless. No chance to change human characteristics."

The owner put it on himself and laughed, shrugging. Then he asked the man if he wanted to try. He tried. He put it on his head. He heard a buzzing sound but he didn't feel any change in his mind. The owner suggested to change the level to '‡V'. He did. The buzzing sound became noisier but nothing changed.

The owner said, "I don't doubt about my friend's opinion; but, I'm too curious to stop using it. So, I used this on level '‡V' for one month, twice a day, once in the morning and again at night. It takes 10 minutes to finish one session. I was a shy person and after a month I am still shy." The guy didn't think the owner was shy, but said nothing.

As the guy looked very curious at the machine, the owner offered to lend this machine for a cheap price and the guy agreed.

When he got to his apartment, he tried it on level '‡V'. After 10 minutes, he felt something weird but soon he realized it was just because of the buzz sound. He didn't feel that anything in his mind changed. He sighed. Even though a small amount of money, he might have been deceived by the owner. But, he had a second thought and decided to continue for a month.

After that day, every morning before going to work, he used this machine. He put the machine on and relaxed on the sofa for 10 minutes. He imaged that the small signal effected his brain's neurons. Although he was suspicious about the machine, he became a little bit more positive about it. His colleagues praised him for being more positive and somehow more cheerful. He liked it.

One day when his girlfriend came to his apartment, she saw the machine and asked him about it. He said it was just an antique decoration. But, as it was on the sofa, she felt something not truthful about his explanation, and questioned him about it. He finally explained truthfully about it. She looked at him with a disbelieved look. He felt weak. She asked him if she could use it. He agreed.

He wound up the knob and set the level on '‡T' and gave it to her. He thought that the lowest level was safer especially for the first time. She took the helmet and sat on the sofa. She moved the level to '‡V', and put it on her head and closed her eyes. She didn't move for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes she still didn't move. He became uneasy and touched her shoulder. She didn't move. He then shook her shoulder. Suddenly, she went into a spasm. He was very upset and quickly took the helmet off of her head. She opened her eyes and started to burst out in laughter. He soon realized that she was just pretending. He was relieved, and didn't say anything to her about such a bad joke.

She said that she liked the machine, and asked him to lend it to her. He wanted to refuse, but couldn't.

Every time when he met her for a date, he realized that her personality changed a little. She became more positive, in another word, more aggressive. Every time he asked her to return his machine, she refused. The possibility to get the gadget back became less and less, he realized.
