Hearing-aid
November 4, 2013
He was young, in his thirties, but he used a hearing-aid.  His ears were weak since birth.  The clerk in the hearing-aid shop said, "Your ears are becoming worse.  I recommend those."  The clerk showed a set of tiny hearing-aids.  The guy said, "This type is the most high-tech.  I can't afford it."  The clerk said, "This is very new, as you said, but if you become a monitor, the price will be half."  He agreed with the proposal.  As soon as he put in the hearing-aids, his face brightened.  He said, "I can hear!  I've never heard like this before!"  The clerk gave him some instructions for usage and he then left the shop.
He was pleased.  He heard birds' singing in the park.  He heard children chatting, and the sounds of a seesaw.  Even the sound of cars' horns attracted him.  He could enjoy the sounds.  His life changed.
But, one day, he accidentally mishandled his hearing-aids.  He pushed the start button for too long, and after
which a strange noise began, the machine became different from before.  It started to hone-in on small human voice, whisperings and even far distant conversations. It was very sensitive, but it didn't pick up other sounds or noises, so these chosen sounds were not loud.
After this day, his life re-changed. He heard young couples' sweet whisperings, quarrels between husbands and wives, workers complaining about their bosses; of course, none of them realized that somebody was listening to them.  He knew this was not good, it was like peeping into somebody's life; but, once he tasted this sweet secrecy, he couldn't stop eavesdropping.
He naturally went to coffee shops often because in there people talked about their private life in small voices.  One day, when he was in a coffee shop, he heard a woman whispering in a monologue; "I want to kill him, I want to kill him, I want to kill him."  He was surprised to hear her say this, and looked at her; she looked to be in her early thirties, she didn't look like a person who would say such things.
