Detective :Strange Request
June 27, 2017
It was a strange request.
A man in his early 60's came into the detective office. He said, "I like your catch phrase, 'Do you need Sherlock Homes?', but I suppose my request is too easy for Sherlock Holmes."

The client started to explain about his request:
He retired from his job recently. They had a farewell party for him, and his subordinates thanked him very much. He worked there for more than 30 years. The later part of his career he was the boss. He said, "I'm not bragging but I was a good boss and all of my subordinates were gracious."

The detective felt that this guy was too confident about himself but said nothing. He continued, "My wife laughs at what I think and says that they were just flattering me. I can't overlook her words. I worked very hard. My job was my life. We had a big fight, and I came here to prove how my workers felt about me."

The detective said, "But c you can just go to your subordinates and ask them to come to your house and explain how they thought about you to your wife. The fee c"  The detective was about to say about that the bill would not be so cheap, but stopped to say it because he needed the work.

The customer said, "Even so, my wife wouldn't believe it. I need a report from a third party." He added, "If you accept, you can be open about this to my subordinates, as long as you can get their true feelings toward me."

At first, it would appear to be a very easy task to investigate about someone with the permission from the person himself to reveal their true sentiments. But, in reality, it isn't. Because human beings tend to be nice to their acquaintances, especially to a person who is retired, so their true feelings are nicely hidden.

But, in this case, his subordinates were very frank. They said:
The boss was too confident about his job, and didn't listen to others' opinions and they lost some of their business chances. The boss was too strict to his subordinates, he never praised them. Because of this, some subordinates had some bad feelings about him. Although they admitted that the boss was hard working and seriousness about his job, their overall esteem was low.

On this day, the guy came to the office and was reading the report that the detective wrote. He was as silent as a stone. His face was like a stone. The detective wondered what he should say to cheer him up. His report might have been too precise about what his subordinates said.

After finishing reading, the guy breathed once deeply and said, "So, my wife was right." The detective couldn't say anything. "This thing reminds me of my old sour memory. Do you want to listen to it?"  The detective nodded silently. The guy started to say:

"It was when I was in college and it was late at night. I woke up at midnight and realized a friend of mine was washing his hair in the sink in my apartment. I was surprised because it was winter and water from the sink was cold, my apartment didn't have a shower. I asked him about it and my friend said, 'Don't you remember? You threw up on my head when I was carrying you on my back. You were so drunk.' I apologized to him again and again and asked if I did other bad things. We had a party on this night at another friend's apartment. I couldn't remember anything. He said nothing. I became restless, and the next day I asked other friends about it. They hesitated to say. We were still friends after the incident but I never truly knew what exactly happened. I shouldn't have asked you to research my subordinates' true feelings, I could have lived peacefully without knowing."
The detective said, "I'm sorry."

The guy paid the bill and left, his shoulders were dropped and the detective was looking at his back. He might not meet the guy again.

But the guy came back two days later. The detective was tense thinking that the guy might complain about his report and ask him for a refund. But the guy started to say brightly:

He told everything to his wife, and his wife hugged him and said that he worked very hard for their family and at least she supported him. She thanked him very much. She said that everyone has weak points, and all he needed to do was to intend to overcome them. And he decided to change his bad aspects from then on. As his first action, he came here. He remembered that he didn't say thank you to the detective for his precise investigation.

The guy added, "And I regretted that I made fun of Sherlock Holmes. Yesterday I bought a Sherlock Holmes book and started to read it. This is great." The detective was happy that a fan of Sherlock Holmes was born.

The guy continued, "And I realized a big fact about something that your job lacks. It's Dr. Watson! Dr. Watson makes Sherlock Holmes' work deeper. And there is an ideal person in front of you. Fortunately, I'm free now. I am a skillful worker c" The detective was surprised at his fast recovery from the situation, and his over-confidence. He thought that people can't change their characteristics easily.
