また、英語の大きな特徴は、aやthe、-sなどが付くことですが、日本語では、いちいち「そのコーチがいった」、「その子供たちは」のように言わず、「コーチが言った」、「子供たちが笑った」のように「その」を付けません。 これは、「その」を付けなくても文脈から分かるためですが、こちらはいちいち選んで付けなければならない英語は面倒です。 この他にも、日本語では過去の表現でも時として現在形と同じものを使ったり(英語の場合は、過去の話では過去形のみ)、受動態や能動態を使うタイミング、などいろいろな違いがあります。 一方、同じ「言語」ですので、共通点の方も多いとは思いますが。 今回は、Ramenr-4 について、訳してみます。 Ramen-4 The guy's ramen restaurant was not so far from the cook's shop downtown. ［男のラーメン屋は、街中のシェフのラーメン店からそれほど遠くないところにあった。］ It was around noon but there were no customers. ［昼だとゆうのに、客はおらず、］ The guy was sitting at the counter with his eyes closed. ［男は、カウンターで目をつむって座っていた。］ The door opened. ［ドアが開いた。］ The guy was about to say hello but the words got stuck. The customer was the cook. ［「いらっしゃい」と言いかけて、男は息を飲んだ。シェフだった。］ The guy said, "Did you come here to charge me or to make fun of me?" ［「からかいに来たのか？」］ The cook sat at the counter, ignoring him, opened the menu and said, "Ramen". ［シェフは、男を無視するようにカウンターに座ると、「ラーメン」と注文した。］ The guy didn't expect him to order but started to make the ramen. ［シェフが注文したのは意外だったが、男はラーメンを作り始めた。］ It was fairly skilful the way he made the ramen. ［男の手つきは手馴れていた。］ A few minutes later he put a bowl of ramen on the counter. ［数分後、カウンターにラーメンが置かれた。］ The cook looked at the appearance of the ramen for a moment and took a bite and said. ［シェフは、ラーメンの様子をチェックした後、一口食べて言った。］ "How did you make this stock?" ［スープは、どう取っているの？］ The guy hesitated a moment but told him its process. ［男は、ちょっと躊躇したが、説明した。］ The cook said, "Your noodles are not bad but your soup is too simple." ［「麺は悪くない。ただ、スープが単調だ。」］ The guy said, "I've been pursuing simple soup for ages. ［「長年、理想のさっぱりしたスープを探している。］ During that time, my wife left me. I liked your ramen's simpleness." ［妻は嫌気がさして去ってしまった。あんたのラーメンはさっぱりしていていい。」］ The cook said, "Oh, 'your wife is dying' means 'she left'." ［「なんだ、奥さんは死んだんじゃなかったんだ。」］ The guy said, ignoring the cook's sarcasm. ［男は、シェフの皮肉を無視して言った。］ "But I'm pursuing a much simpler one, as simple as water." ［だが、オレの求めているのは、もっとさっぱりしたやつだ。水のように。］ The cook said, "You are pursuing what doesn't exist. Can you really afford to do that?" ［「そんなものないものねだりさ。第一、のんきにそんなものを求めている余裕があるとは思えないけど。」］ The guy said nothing. ［男は、何も答えなかった。］ The cook said, "By the way do you want to know my tips?" ［シェフは、話題を変え言った。「ところで、ウチのラーメンの秘密知りたい？」］ The guy stared at the cook with a face of disbelief and said. "I..if you don't mind..." ［男は、まさかという顔になったって言った。「もしいいんだったら...。」］ The cook started to explain his tips for his ramen and the guy fiercely took notes. ［シェフが、話し始め、男は必死にメモを取る。］ But soon the guy stopped writing and said. ［しかし、男は途中で手を止めて言った。］ "Haven't you had a hard time to get your tips?" ［「この秘密を見つけ出すのに大変たったんじゃないか。」］ The cook said, "I worked hard, so hard that my wife also left saying she couldn't follow me anymore." ［「そりゃ一生懸命研究したさ。ウチのかみさんも、もうついてけないって出て行っちゃったよ。」］ The guy asked, "So why are you telling me your tips? ［それだったら、どうして俺なんかに。］ I am your competitor." ［競争相手じゃないか。」］ The cook said, "As I mentioned before, our competition is so fierce that if you join in, nothing will change. ［「前にも言ったけど、この業界の競争は、あんたが加わったからといって変わるほど楽じゃないさ。］ I simply wanted to do something ridiculous for a change." ［ちょっと気分転換をして見たかっただけだよ。」］ The guy closed his memo pad and said. ［男は、メモ帳を閉じて言った。］ "My idea to make simpler ramen was not a joke and your ramen is surly better but not the best." ［「究極のシンプルなラーメンを作るというのは本気だ。あんたのラーメンはいいが、ベストじゃない。」］ The cook glared at the guy. ［シェフは、男をにらみつけて言った。］ "OK. I want to see that ramen and I really hope you won't end up just saying you'll make it." ［「そりゃあ見てみたいもんだ。単なる夢で終わらないことを祈っているよ。」］ He cynically laughed and left. ［シェフは、皮肉っぽく笑うと出て行った。］ The guy was satisfied with his own answer but he soon realized that he didn't have any idea how to make that super simple ramen and started to regret that he hadn't gotten the cook's tips when they were offered to him so easily. ［男は、最初は自分の言ったことにまんざらでもなかったが、すぐに究極のシンプルなラーメンの目処も立っていないことに気づいた。 そして、わざわざ向こうから秘密を教えてくれるチャンスを逃したことに後悔し始めていた。］ |
