ＳＴＯＲＩＥＳ の Runner-4 です。 英語と日本語は何が違うか、を考えてもらう材料としてもいいかもしれません。そんなわけで、わざと直訳でなく日本語っぽく訳しています。 Runner-4 After her coach quit, her motivation for running went down. ［コーチが辞めた後、なにか走る気がしなくなり、］ She rested for several days. ［彼女は何日間かトレーニングを休んだ。］ She insisted on what her coach said, she shouldn't run if she felt bad. ［調子が悪いときは走るべきではない、といったコーチの言葉にもこだわっていた。］ She felt bad because of him! ［調子が悪いのは、コーチのせいなんだから。］ Her first marathon day was approaching. ［彼女にとって最初のマラソンの日が近づいていた。］ So she started running but she couldn't concentrate on it. ［しかたなく走り始めたが、でもどうしても集中できない。］ Soon her boyfriend said that her form was not the one she had used with the coach. ［彼氏がすぐに、コーチがいたときとフォームが違うと指摘して、］ It made her upset. ［彼女を慌てさせた。］ The more she pursued her original form the more her form became far from it. ［元のフォームを思い出そうとしたが、もがけばもがくほどフォームが変になってしまい、］ She was becoming confused. ［どうもならなかった。］ Today she was sitting on the bench in the park. ［この日は、一人公園のベンチに座って彼女は考えていた。］ She was thinking about why humans run. ［人間って、なぜ走るんだろう。］ She saw a child running. ［男の子が走っているのが見えた。］ He fell down and cried. ［男の子は、転んで泣いた。］ His mother helped him to stand up. ［お母さんが、男の子を立たせた。］ Then, amazingly he started to run again! ［そうしたらなんと、男の子がまた走り始めた。］ She thought. ［彼女は考える。］ "Wasn't he afraid of falling again? ［また転ぶことが、怖くないんだろうか。］ Maybe children are nearer to primitive animals than adults are. ［多分、子供って大人より野生の動物に近いから。］ Why do animals run? ［でも、どうして、動物って走るんだろう。］ Of course they run to get their food. ［もちろん、餌を求めてよね。］ Or small animals run to escape from being eaten. ［それに、小さい動物だったら、食べられないように逃げることになる。］ Only humans run without purpose. ［人間だけが、目的なしに走っているわけだ。］ Without purpose? ［でも、本当に目的なしにだろうか。］ Can't fun be the purpose? ［楽しいって、目的ではないのかな。］ Isn't fun a good reason?" ［楽しいってことだって、ちゃんとした理由じゃないのかな。］ She didn't know. ［彼女には、よく分からなかった。］ She saw a middle aged woman performing taichi in the distance. ［離れたところで、おばさんが太極拳をしているのが見えた。］ Her rhythm was very slow and her form was elegant. ［踊りのリズムはとてもゆっくりで、優雅だった。］ She was watching her action for a while. ［しばらくその様子を見ていたら、］ Suddenly she got an idea. ［突然、ある考えがひらめいた。］ She stood and posed with a running form and began to run very slowly, as slow as taichi. ［彼女は立ち上がると、ランニングのポーズを取りゆっくり動きはじめた。太極拳のように。］ She remembered her coach said that she should listen to the voice from the depths of her mind. ［コーチが、自分の内なる声に耳を傾けるようにと話していたのを思い出していた。］ She concentrated on her form. ［フォームに集中して、］ She closed her eyes. ［目を閉じた。］ She felt her form was starting to be better. ［しだいに、フォームがよくなっている感じがした。］ She performed earnestly. ［彼女は、一心不乱に演じて、］ After her performance she opened her eyes and saw a lot of children were gathered around watching her. ［それを終え、目を開けると、たくさんの子供たちが彼女を取り囲むように見ていた。］ She felt embarrassed and said. ［彼女は、恥ずかしさを感じながらも聞いた。］ "You guys, what are you doing?" ［君たち何しているの。］ The children looked too shy to say anything and stared at her. ［子供たちは、恥ずかしそうに彼女を見ているだけだったが、］ Soon one boy came to her and said. ［そのうち、一人の少年が彼女の前に出て言った。］ "We've never seen your type of running form. ［僕たち、お姉さんのような走り方、今まで見たことないよ。］ It's interesting. ［変わっているよね。］ Can we imitate you?" ［でも、真似てやってみていい。］ She laughed and said. ［彼女は、笑って答えた。］ "Why not?" ［そんなもの、いいに決まっているじゃない。］ She started her running performance again, this time a little faster. ［彼女は、今度は、いくぶん早いバージョンで動作を始めた。］ The children followed her imitating her. ［子供たちが、後ろをまねしながらついていく。］ This embarrassed her but at the same time she felt proud of it. ［恥ずかしさを感じながらも、何か誇らしい気持ちで彼女はいっぱいになっていた。］ |
