His Ideas 25 ~ Keeping Mental Health
March 17, 2021
He watched a TV program that was about people's mental crisis under the coronavirus pandemic. One person was too nervous about the coronavirus, she sprayed disinfectant spray around all of her rooms in her house every hour, she washed her hands every thirty minutes! Another person became neurotic after working at home. The program mentioned that since the coronavirus pandemic a new type of stress has appeared, 'Staying Home Stress', it has been increasing. The characteristics of this stress is the deterioration of relationships between family members. In fact, the number of domestic violence have increased.

In the male worker's case, he worked for a consulting company and was assigned to a big foreign project. After remote working started, he felt sick and, at last, he had to take long term sick leave. He had insomnia, he felt like vomiting, he had excessive breathing. He lived with his wife and two elementary school aged kids. The two kids were at home because of no classes, and often came to him to play with them or to teach them how to do their homework. He gradually got mad at his kids, and complained more and more to his wife. In the interview he said that before he could go out drinking with his colleagues to get the stress out after work. Even commuting to/from was good for him in order to change his feelings from home to work and work to home.

His remark reminded him of an article that he read that Google developed an app that offers the user a "virtual commuting" experience. He laughed at that time thinking about the user of the app would change their clothes before the "commuting time", and during which, would sit still while reading a book or listening to music, all the while staying at home.

The man ended up going to a mental clinic. Thanks to the doctor's advice, he changed his lifestyle, fixed the time of getting up, going to bed, eating meals, and he started writing a diary about these experience and his conditions. He started to take walks regularly. He never opened his computer. After 2 months of sick leave, he returned to his job, although it was still remote working. The family talked and decided that children wouldn't enter the father's room when he was working. After TV meetings, he said, he would meditate for 5 minutes. It was the doctor's recommendation, and it would work to rid of the stress and "cool down".

Personally, he was a freelancer and lived alone so he had never thought about the stress from working at home. But, to come to think of it, he could imagine how hard it would be to work at home with one's family. For example, you have a Zoom meeting, and you might have to apologize to your customer for your company's product's problem. You would feel stressed if knowing that your wife and children were in the next room listening.

His Idea #25 : Keeping Mental Health

Maybe Google's idea of management of commuting time software was great. The doctor on TV emphasized the importance to divide working time from other times because working time is stressful and would last until you could change your feeling suitably.

He once watched TV about a famous syogi master who, when he built his new house, he made a one story building separately for only his job, thinking about syogi strategies.

He recently browsed a website that a city government made in which offered a diary for printing for their citizens, in which people could write their daily data for their health benefit, like their weight, blood pressure, what they ate, how they exercised, their sleeping time, their temperature, their condition, etc. Included was the name of a doctor or consultant who could talk with if they felt bad physically and mentally.
