Inventor 2 ~Tears Producing System
March 19, 2020
On this day, a woman, in her early 30s, came to the inventor's office. As she was kind of pretty, the inventor's mind lifted up; but, her concerns brought his mood down:

She couldn't cry.
When she was young, she often laughed and cried. In this country, there was a saying that her generation "easily laughed even when looking at chopsticks rolling." She was. But as she grew up, she entered a trading company. As her job became tough and busy, the number of the times that she cried decreased. Although she had to laugh intentionally when her customers made bad jokes. But, she didn't care about it because it was like proof of being a skillful business woman. Until one day. On this day she and her boyfriend went to see a movie, and it was a very sad movie. Her boyfriend cried many times during the movie but she didn't. Her boyfriend looked embarrassed that he cried a lot but she never did. He didn't say anything about it, but after that she felt that their relationship wasn't as good as before. She thought that her boyfriend might think that she was a cold person. But what was worse was that she started to think that she herself might be a cold person. She wanted to be a person who could cry.

He wanted to say to her that he was a person who wanted to cry at her story. He wanted to suggest to her to go to a psychiatrist or hypnotist. But she stared at him with two big eyes pleading for a favor. He couldn't say anything. He asked her to come again one week later, until then he would make something for her.

He was an easy crying person.
The more he had aged, the more he became moved to tears easily. Maybe people experienced sad things more as they aged, and those things caused them to cry. Or, maybe it was just some hormonal disorder. He would cry even watching commercial on TV, or by seeing a cute stray cat, or an old couple who was helping each other, etc.

Maybe he could make some gadget that could spray eye drops automatically. Actually, human beings are the type of creatures whose feelings are easily tricked. If they get fake tears, maybe they would feel that they might be sad, and so real tears would come. But, maybe she wouldn't like this idea. She seemed to be a strict person. Maybe her strictness made her not cry. He checked on the internet. Crying gives people good effects like laughing or sleeping well. One professor said that tears could work better than any medicine for depression. It reminded him of some lyrics of a song that he liked when he was a high school student, "Tears are sweats of your mind..."

One week later she came to the inventor's office. He handed her a gadget saying that he couldn't call it an 'invention'. She said, "I'm a practical person. As long as it works, who cares?" The inventor had a bad hunch.

One week later, the woman came back to the inventor's office. The inventor had no idea whether the gadget worked or not, as her expression was kind of flat. She started to explain:

"After taking a shower after work on the first night, I put on this goggle VR machine. As you mentioned, this thing might not be an 'invention', though." He bitterly nodded. Actually, he bought it at an electric appliance shop. She continued, "I started to play the first movie from the list. The movie was great. I think this is not your film, right? Although this was the first time for me to see it."  He bitterly nodded again.

"I was amazed by the story that a young woman wanted to repair the relationship with her old boyfriend and sent letters to him. But the letters reached another guy who lived two years in the past. They started to interact "beyond time" through the letters. The guy who received the letters started to like her, but she asked him to change the past in order to make her old boyfriend love her again... I was deeply moved, but unfortunately ..." He said, "You don't need to feel sorry." She said, "I first thought that you would make something that would give my brain pulses or something like that but this was just a movie player." The inventor said, "I'm not a doctor. I can't take those risks. Movies are one of the great inventions by humans."

She said, "Yes. The second movies was also great! It was a unique story a "spy family" was sent to their country's enemy, a democratic country. They were a "fake family", including a father, a mother, a daughter, and a grandfather, who were skillful spies who didn't hesitate to kill people. They were ordered to kill a neighboring family. The family was non-intelligent, lazy, and selfish; people who were not worthy to live by their country's standards. But, the spies started to like the sloppy family. In fact, they started to love each other because everyone was so different from each other. At the last scene, I almost cried ... sorry." The inventor said, "You don't need to apologize." She said, "But, I can say, maybe the next time, I can cry. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the three movies on the list. And, if you don't mind, I hope you will add more movies. You have to be a movie freak, because your choices are amazing."

The inventor replied, "Maybe no problem as long as you give me time."  She asked, "What do you mean? Choosing movies that moved you before takes time?" She soon realized something, and asked, "They weren't movies that you watched before?" The inventor nodded and replied, "I'm not a movie buff. I watched some that were recommended on the internet like 'Best Tearful Movies'. Then I excluded some famous ones, thinking that you might have watched those before, and chose these five."  She said, "Wait! So you haven't watched these five before my request?" She asked one more thing, "You said 'chose'? In that case, how many movies did you watch for me?" He became embarrassed hearing 'for me'; he replied, "20."  "Twenty?!" She was speechless to know that this guy watched twenty movies in a short amount of time just to make her cry ... He said, "This was also a good chance for me to watch some good movies. Now I'm interested in finding other moving movies." "You are ...," she couldn't find the next word, instead something warm started to well up in her eyes.
