His Ideas 18 ~ Exercising
January 13.2021
It was mysterious.
In his late 40s, he had a membership to a sports gym which he kept for several years. He didn't go to the gym very often, although the gym was located in a very convenient area near his apartment and work. The gym was open from morning till night, 7 days a week. Even so, he only went there once a month, in the worst case, once in a half year! It was a waste of money because the monthly fee was expensive. But he didn't quit. Thinking about it now, maybe he had some expectations that he would eventually go there and make a healthy and strong body. But it didn't happen. Several years later, the gym closed, and he naturally lost his membership.

A couple of decades later, one of his colleagues asked him if he would be a "group member" at a gym with him and another colleague, since three members' monthly membership was cheaper than a single one. He agreed with it. At this time, he was in his early 50s. Maybe he wanted revenge against his failure at the last gym.

A strange thing happened. He started to go there regularly. He went there 2 or 3 times a week even though the gym was located on the opposite side of town from his working place and his apartment. He has been going there regularly ever since. Now he was in his early 60s.

He once bought an exercise bike, it was kind of expensive although it was secondhand. He thought that he could use it anytime when he wanted to, but only used it less than ten times. He gave it to a friend of his.

At his present gym, he often used an exercise bike. When pedaling, he would watch TV on the monitor in front of the bike. Recently he started to read books which he brought. On the bike his body doesn't move up and down so much, so reading a book can be done smoothly.

[His Idea #18 : Exercising]

In the coronavirus situation, people had to stay at home longer than before. It made people more less move, and become unhealthy and stressful. On the other hand, exercising by oneself is kind of hard to continue. Many people tend to stop soon.

・Double purpose exercising
If you can exercise while doing other things, it would be like killing two birds with one stone. How about reading a book, a newspaper, a magazine, or watching TV or listening to the radio while pedaling, walking, or doing a squat?

・Competing with something
If you have a counterpart to compete with or just a partner to help each other, you would feel more motivated. Maybe some apps or sports gyms can start virtual sports classes or contests online. You can register your avatar. With the amount of your exercising, your avatar's rank fluctuate up or down depending on time and energy you spend. As there are watches, like an i-watch, the machine could measure your exercising, maybe some apps could measure it as well. If they prepared some type of awards depending on the attendants' age and weight, people would get more excited.
